Skardu is located in the Eastern part of Gilgit Baltistan which is the North most part of Pakistan. The city is around 2230 meters in altitude. It is considered to be one of the most important cities of the region and is situated alongside Shigar and Indus Rivers. The city is also in between the Karakoram and Himalaya mountain ranges. The location provides the region with a very different landscape and ecosystem compared to the other areas in the country as well as the world.

A Pleasant Climate in Skardu

The climate of Skardu is a little mild as compared to the other places in the Northern region of Pakistan. The area experiences the highest temperature of around 30 degrees in June to September whereas December to February are the coldest months in the region with temperatures dropping to minus range. The region experiences heavy rainfalls from December to May.

Ideal Seasons for Visiting Skardu

Summer is the best time to visit Skardu because temperatures are much lower in the area. Additionally, all schools and other educational institutions are closed due to summer vacations making it easier for the families to travel. People can enjoy the lush green sceneries at a reasonable temperature without being interrupted by rainfalls and away from the extreme heat of the other areas of the country. Another suitable time to visit the area is October when the travelers can enjoy different colors of autumn. Skardu: A Climber's Paradise

Skardu is the climber’s paradise and contains the most fascinating and spectacular views related to the mountains. Hundreds of unexplored peaks challenge the climbers and mountaineers. Climbing is only one of the adventures provided by the area whereas exploring the local culture is an equally interesting experience. Beauty of Manthokha Waterfall

One fascinating point in the area is Manthokha waterfall which is located in Kharmang valley of Skardu. The waterfall is around 100 meters high from the ground and is located around 80 kms away from the main Skardu city. The waterfall is surrounded by lush green pastures where sheep and other cattle graze in the summers; providing a unique natural experience to the tourists. Most of the restaurants in the area have been designed indigenously. The main attraction of the area is the local trout fish which can be caught fresh from the waters. There are many fish farms where trout fish is kept for the tourists for sightseeing.

Khamosh Waterfall in Hamzigan Village

Another worth touring place is the Khamosh waterfall which is located in he Hamzigan village. This waterfall is among the highest natural waterfalls in the region and is also called Shrithing waterfall. The waterfall does not have any pool at its base which makes the water drops to scatter across the area. The waterfall is surrounded mainly by Rocky Mountains. This tourist spot is around 60-65 kms away from the main Skardu city. However, due to hilly and mountainous area, it takes almost 4 hours from Skardu to the base of waterfall. There are a few hanging bridges joining Skardu and the waterfall. Some of these bridges are affected by rains in the monsoon season and it becomes impossible to access the waterfall.

Must Visit Kachura Lakes and Satpara Lake

Another attraction in the area is a set of three lakes named as Kachura lakes. These lakes are present at 2500 meters in altitude. The lower Kachura lake is also called Shangrila lake because it is located within the tourist resort named Shangrila. The third lake is located in a small village named Zambakha which is adjacent to Shangri-La. The lakes are located within the Karakoram mountain range of the western Himalayas. The Upper Kachura Lake has clear water and is 230 feet deep. The water temperature is 15 degrees Centigrade in summers and is frozen in the winters. The lake remains unexplored by the tourists because there is a lack of infrastructure. The rich flora of the area includes apricots and other local plants. Satpara lake is another point that is worth visiting in Skardu. It is a natural lake situated near Skardu and supplies water to the whole Skardu city. The lake is situated at the height of 8650 feet above the sea level and covers an area of 2.5 squared kilometers. The main source of water for the lake is the melting ice from the Deosai plains.

Historical Kharphocho Fort

Kharphocho fort is another worth visiting place in Skardu area which was initially built by the king Ali Sher Khan Anchan in the last part of sixteenth century. The generals working under Raja Gulab Singh assessed the importance of the location of forts in the town and they occupied it. Both foreigner and local tourists are entertained by the incumbents of the fort when they visit it.
